Sanded scarf joints and final trimmed empennage fairing. Sanded canopy forward edge I think I can call it done.
Match drilled VS attach plate, spacer, and front spar and HS spar reinforcement. Primed and riveted match drilled parts.
Installed elevators, clamped for neutral position, and fabricated a drill block to match drill elevator horns for pushrod. There is about a 7/8″ gap between horns so the drill block keeps the drill bit perpendicular to the horn being drilled.
Installed elevator pushrod, adjusted rod ends, and fabricated pushrod spacers. Checked elevator travel, up and down are both 23 degrees. So I will need to remove some of the control stop face to get the up travel in spec of 25 to 30 degrees.
Double checked for vertical on rear spar. Laser marked center for bottom spar attach bolts. There is no way to get a straight edge on the bottom spar to mark center so the laser comes in handy.
The top two holes are critical as they attach to the tail spring weldment and edge distance between the weldment and hinge bracket is marginal. I lowered the measurement in the plans by 1/32″ just to be sure. Match drilled rear spar to bulkhead assembly and control stop angle. Edge margins all look great!
Centered VS longitudinally with Vans string method. This was much more time consuming than the HS as the VS needs to be adjusted in three directions and it seems that each effects the other so lots of tweaking.
Match drilled forward and aft horizontal spars to aft deck. These are critical with no margin for error. So I measured many times. After marking edges of the spacer blocks on the bottom of the reinforcement I flipped the stab over and drew my reference lines and drilled pilot holes then reassembled and drilled to final size. Turned out well with good edge margins. The screw lacking proper lenght in the picture was replaced with a -9.
Positioned vertical stabilizer to fuselage, ajusted for square and clamped rear spar to bulkhead. Marked location of bottom spar bolt holes.
Finished SB 14-01-31. Took me about 22 hours total so now I should be good to go.
After leveling fuselage longitudinally and horizontally I centered the stab on the aft deck and checked for level then match drilled the stabilizer bars to the aft spar.
Then I aligned and clamped the stab laterally at 101 3/8 inches both sides to mark drill holes on forward spar reinforcement.
Began riveting SB doublers to forward spars. All went well, the inner most rivets were the hardest due to limited space.
Primed parts that were prepped yesterday.
Prime doublers and reinforcements, riveted flange to instrument sub panel, dimpled right cockpit rail, and marked rivet holes on cockpit rail gusset flanges.
